Playoff fever has hit the Premiere’s Office. Even more
excited than team fans, the Ontario government is gripped with post season
anticipation as the Toronto Maple Leafs have clinched a spot in the NHL
playoffs, their first appearance since 2013, and only second in 13 years. To mark the acheievement a Parade Route Tax is on the way**.
Happening Saturday night during a home game at the Air
Canada Centre, the Leafs clinching a playoff spot with a 5-3 win over the
Pittsburgh Penguins set off a whirlwind of communication between Premiere Kathleen
Wynne and members of her cabinet. “Within seconds of the game finishing my cell
phone went off, and so did many others. We all began receiving messages, emails
and texts, directly from the Premiere. She was ecstatic to begin Parade Route
Tax planning Monday morning” tells one member.
The message was simple. Wynne was notifying her cabinet to
be ready to work Monday, with a plan to table legislation to allow the province
to tax any potential Parade and/or Stanley Cup celebration in Toronto. With the Maple Leafs playoff run
beginning Thursday, planning for Wynne’s Parade Route Tax needs to be done
quickly, and is expected to be a dominate topic at Queen’s Park this week.
With Ontarians paying some of the highest Hydro rates in
North America, healthcare funding being slashed, housing prices sky rocketing
and the economy not keeping up, this proposed Parade Route Tax legislation will
build on Kathleen Wynne’s approach to leading the province. There has been no
word on why the tax is needed, or where any generated revenue from the tax
would go. Rather, the main priority is to have the tax in place in time, should
the Toronto Maple Leafs, their fans, and the City of Toronto, be lucky enough
to host such a celebration.
